Red Queen By Victoria Aveyard

                                     Book Review

 Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Actual rating: 3.5 stars buddy read with Chelsea!!!

Plot: I connected a lot with the storyline in the beginning, it had a " The Selection" feel to it which i loved. I loved reading about her life in the Castle and about the powers and the training. When it started to get into the Red Rebellion or the " Scarlet Guard" i started feeling less connected to the story and characters. The famous plot twist at the end i did not see coming i don't know if i necessarily agree with the placement of it but i did enjoy nonetheless. The epic battle at the end i will say i loved. I also would like to quickly include that Mares's powers seemingly popped out no where because she never mentioned seeing signs of it or anything weird when she was younger and it seemed like her powers were just there to be convenient.

Characters: I liked Mare especially in the beginning, but in the middle/ end that connection slowly declined. Cal one of the love interests, felt pretty cookie cutter and flat. I really liked Maven for most of the book and his connection with Mare was awesome to read. I shipped them more than i shipped her and Cal. I also liked the villainy of the Queen that was intriguing. The other characters , Mare's family and Kilorn felt flat Mare kept referring to the Scarlet Guard as her " friends" but i never saw an actual friendship between them establish itself the only friend she had in the Guard was Kilorn. My disconnect with her family made one of the reveals at the end less impactful for me. The " plot twist" with the queen didn't surprise me at all it was pretty obvious. Mare made very stupid comments and decisions throughout the book that kind of frustrated me those who have read the book will understand what i mean but at the end what she decided to say to Cal that changed everything that was a very naive and stupid move.

World Building: The world in this book was the best aspect in my opinion it was thoroughly fleshed out it was intriguing and i was hooked on the world it sucked me in The whole dynamic between the Reds and Silvers is very frequent and overdone in this genre but it never gets old for me the dynamic between them was very intriguing and frankly the Silver's powers and houses as well as house colors fascinated me to learn about i loved this aspect of the book and i loved the princessy feel in the beginning that reminded me so much of The Selection. The one thing that bothered me about the world was the fact that throughout this whole book the country was at war and it was never explained why other than that the world building was the shining star in this book

Romance: The romance between Mare and Cal i found extremely lacking it seemingly appeared out of no where with its only purpose to further the plot. Their so called connection was laughable and pretty much nonexistent. Her connection to Maven however was pretty well established as they spent a considerable amount of time together and i couldn't help but root for them. Maven and Mare balanced each other out perfectly and i enjoyed reading about their romance was it an amazing blow me out the water romance? no but it was well established and enjoyable to read about

The Writing Style: The writing was pretty straight forward and simple it further moved along the story the writing was pretty goof despite some overly flowery moments here or there the writing toward the end was kind of making the story feel boring but i think the plot and writing were working together to do that pretty much sums up the writing it was pretty straight forward

Overall I'd recommend this to see what all the hype is about like i did and if your a fan of fantasy like i am it wasn't amazing the first half definitely was but the second half ruined it for me this book was pretty good and the whole you can't trust anyone aspect was pretty cool and unique about it and i enjoyed that.
